Labor Day T.R.A.V.E.L. Tips for Traveling with a Loved One

Labor Day Travel

Labor Day often marks the last big trip of the summer, but traveling with a loved one who has dementia can feel overwhelming without the right preparation. With a little planning, you can make the journey less stressful and more enjoyable for everyone. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) has created an easy way to remember important steps: T.R.A.V.E.L.

T – Time the Travel Wisely

Schedule your trip around your loved one’s best times of day. Sticking as closely as possible to their normal routine—meals, rest, and activities—helps reduce confusion and makes the journey more comfortable.

R – Reduce Stress and Anxiety

New places and busy environments can feel overwhelming. If flying, explain airport security and screening in simple terms so your loved one knows what to expect. The more familiar it feels, the less stressful it will be.

A – Avoid Overscheduling Your Labor Day

It’s tempting to squeeze in every activity, but too much stimulation can lead to agitation. Build downtime into your plans, make room for snacks and rest breaks, and try to avoid traveling during heavy traffic periods.

V – Value Quality Over Quantity

Focus on making meaningful memories rather than checking off a long list of attractions. A slower pace gives space for connection and enjoyment.

E – Explore Assistance Options

If you’re flying, reach out to TSA Cares at least 72 hours before your trip. They can help with security screenings, early boarding, and other accommodations to make the process smoother.

L – Leave Prepared

Pack more than just the basics. Bring snacks, water, a favorite comfort item, and extra clothing. Keep important documents, medication lists, and doctor’s contact information with you at all times in case of emergencies.

Support When You Need It

If you have questions or need more guidance, AFA offers a Helpline staffed by licensed social workers via phone, text, or web chat—available seven days a week. The Alzheimer's Alliance is open Monday-Friday 8AM-4PM to assist you with your next steps.
